Tattoo Aftercare in Kolkata: A Practical Guide

A tattoo is an open wound. How it looks in five years depends far more on the two weeks after the session than on the session itself. Most aftercare advice online is written for temperate climates — Kolkata's combination of heat, humidity, dust and a genuinely punishing monsoon changes several things, so it is worth being specific.

The first 24 hours

Your artist will cover the tattoo before you leave. There are two common options, and they are handled differently.

  • Cling film or a simple wrap: keep it on for two to four hours, then remove it. Do not sleep in it — trapped plasma and sweat under plastic in Kolkata heat is exactly how infections start.
  • Second-skin adhesive film: this stays on for two to four days. Some fluid pooling under it is normal and expected. If it leaks or lifts at the edges, take it off, wash the area, and switch to the open-air method below.

Once the wrap is off, wash the tattoo with clean lukewarm water and a fragrance-free soap, using your hand rather than a cloth or loofah. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel — not the family bath towel, which carries bacteria and lint. Let it air-dry for fifteen minutes before applying anything.

Day 2 to day 7: the messy stage

The tattoo will feel like a sunburn, look slightly raised, and start to scab lightly. This is normal. Wash it twice a day — three times if you have been out in traffic and dust — and apply a very thin layer of unscented moisturiser after each wash.

Thin is the key word. A thick layer of ointment suffocates the skin and traps humidity against it. If the tattoo looks shiny or greasy, you have used too much — blot the excess off with a clean tissue.

Around day four or five it will start to flake and itch, and flakes will come away carrying what looks alarmingly like ink. That is dead surface skin, not your tattoo leaving. The pigment sits deeper than that.

What to avoid while it heals

  • Scratching or picking. This is the single most common cause of patchy, faded tattoos that need reworking. If the itch is unbearable, tap the area through clean clothing.
  • Soaking. No pools, no ponds, no long baths, no Ganga dips for at least two to three weeks. Showers are fine.
  • Direct sun on the fresh tattoo. UV breaks down fresh pigment fast. Once fully healed, sunscreen on the tattoo is the best long-term investment you can make in how it ages.
  • Sweat-heavy workouts for the first week, especially anything that stretches the tattooed skin. Gym equipment is also a genuine bacterial risk on an open wound.
  • Tight clothing over the area. Waistbands over hip tattoos and bra straps over shoulder pieces will rub the scabs off prematurely.
  • Monsoon rainwater. Street water in Kolkata during the rains is not clean. If you get caught in it, wash the tattoo properly as soon as you get home.

Humidity, dust and the Kolkata problem

Two local factors matter more here than the standard advice accounts for. The first is sweat: high humidity means you are sweating onto a healing wound most of the year. Loose cotton clothing over the area, and an extra wash after any time spent outdoors, handles this. The second is road dust, which is unavoidable if you commute. Keeping the tattoo covered with loose, breathable fabric while travelling — not plastic — is worth the minor inconvenience.

If you have air conditioning, use it during the first week. Lower ambient humidity genuinely speeds up the early healing stage.

Healing timeline at a glance

  1. 1.Days 1–3: Redness, swelling, some plasma weeping. Wash and moisturise lightly.
  2. 2.Days 4–7: Flaking and itching begins. Do not scratch.
  3. 3.Days 8–14: Most flaking finishes. The tattoo may look dull or cloudy — this is normal.
  4. 4.Weeks 3–4: The cloudy layer clears and the true colour settles in.
  5. 5.Months 2–3: Deeper skin layers finish healing. This is when a touch-up, if needed, can be assessed properly.

When to see a doctor

Mild redness, warmth and swelling in the first few days are expected. These are not:

  • Spreading redness that moves outward from the tattoo after day three
  • Thick yellow or green discharge, as opposed to clear plasma
  • Fever, chills, or feeling generally unwell
  • Pain that increases after day three instead of decreasing
  • Red streaks running away from the tattooed area

Any of the above means see a doctor promptly rather than messaging your artist and waiting. A tattoo infection is a medical issue, not an art issue — and it is treatable easily when caught early.

Long-term care

Once healed, the two things that keep a tattoo sharp are sunscreen and hydration. Kolkata gets strong sun for most of the year, and UV exposure is the main reason tattoos fade and blur over a decade. Sunscreen on exposed tattoos is a small habit with a very large payoff. Fine line work in particular benefits from being kept out of direct sun.
